Scientologist Printer

This was a pretty complex printing job. Plus, I had to completely reassemble the color separation negatives as they were prepared incorrectly. But the result turned out to be one of my best examples of lithographic craftsmanship. I’d done a spectacular job, especially in light of the complexity and the pressure to speed things up. But the Church execs in charge of the project expressed no appreciation nor gratitude for my exceptional efforts. Instead, they were only irritated that the job took as long as it did. As I sometimes say, "no good deed goes unpunished."

I was printing all kinds of Scientology material for organizations like the L. Ron Hubbard PR Bureau, Dianetics Central Marketing Unit, and the Flag Command Bureau. It gave me a unique view of the inner workings of the Church that wasn’t available to your average Scientologist. I also got the opportunity to get to know a few mid-management execs I wouldn’t ever meet in the normal course of Scientology activities.

Outside of the Church, I did a lot of work for Sterling Management, a prominent consulting firm run by Scientologists using Hubbard management policies. (They received unwanted notoriety by getting mentioned in Time Magazine in a 1991 article titled, “Scientology, Cult of Power and Greed.”) I also did some printing for jazz keyboardist and celebrity Scientologist Chick Corea. He owned his own recording studio and they regularly enlisted my printing services.
